Fishing Update: 6-28-2013

Kevin is currently fishing in the Sacramento River for trout and shad, and in Lake Oroville for coho salmon and bass. Fishing has been very good.

The short Alaska season is coming right up, and California salmon season starts on July 16.

Sacramento River Shad Fishing is Great
The Sacramento River shad fishing has been awesome, with 20 to 40 fish per trip. The secret is using ultra light gear and fly rods, along with small green and pink shad flies. These silvery shad are quick, acrobatic, and a whole lot of fun to catch.

Great Action on Redding Wild Trout
The Redding-area trout fishing has been world class, with 20 to 40 spectacular trout up to 5 pounds on each trip. This is a catch and release fishery, and the wild trout found here are strong, stocky, and very colorful. We use ultra light gear and have a blast!

Lake Oroville Coho & Bass Fishing
Lake Oroville coho salmon fishing is the best in the state, and also the only place in the state with a fishery for these hard fighters. Limits of five coho per angler are common.

With the abundant pond smelt and other forage found in Lake Oroville, coho here can grow an inch a month on average. They'll often rocket to the surface with spectacular leaps.

The current California inland coho record fish came from Lake Oroville. It was 8 lb. 1 oz., 26.5 inches long, and had a 16 inch girth. It was caught by Hoshua Giordano on March 3, 2012, and there may be even bigger coho in the lake. That's a good fish!

If you like spotted bass fishing, then Lake Oroville is your place too. We'll often catch up to 50 bass per day, and it is awesome fishing.

What's Next?
All this great fishing will stay good until sometime in July. And what's next? Alaska!

The Alaska fishing season is coming up! With big king salmon, halibut, and lots of sockeye salmon, it will be an unforgettable adventure.

After a short season in Alaska, I will be heading back to the Sacramento River to fish for California king salmon. Last season was very good, and this year is projected to be even better. The California king salmon season starts on July 16 this year.
