What's Happening in Yellowstone Country -- Blue Ribbon Fles Fish Report

Blue Ribbon Flies

I cannot recall when the Madison has fished as well as it has this week. Not only nymph but dry-fly and streamers are taking many fine fish daily and very few anglers are getting to experience this awesome fishing. Too, the Box Canyon of the Henry's Fork and the Madison, Gibbon and Firehole Rivers in Yellowstone National Park are fishing well too. Every morning we huddle-up around the coffee machine at the shop and draw straws for who fishes where after reviewing anglers fishing reports from the previous day. Looking ahead this month we realize there are still 2 full weeks before anglers arrive in number. We all lament the fact that too few anglers are here to experience the incredible angling opportunities we have now. I guess those of us lucky to be here will have to defend the ship and put more time on the water!

All of us at BRF are fishing daily whether in the afternoon or evening hours. Aaron has spent most his time in the Park as have I, John is in the Park and on the Henry's Fork, Bucky on the lake and in the Park, Cam has fished lakes and small water, Doug has been on the Madison near Raynolds Bridge. Our guides are floating the river and all of us are having a fishing spring to remember. If I were you and had some time I would be in Yellowstone country as soon as I could get here it is that good!

A reminder to all anglers who love the Madison and its wild trout; you have until 21 June to comment on the Madison River Recreation Plan. Simply go to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks web site and follow the directions to get to the comment page. PLEASE take a few minutes to comment. John worked hard serving on the Madison Citizens' Advisory Commission and looks forward to your comments regarding the river recreation plan going forward.

You might want to check out an article about our conservation history in the summer issue of Mountain Outlaw Magazine or follow this link to load the piece. We are honored to have such a flattering feature article written about the conservation success we have had the privilege to be a part of and celebrate. Projects like $3 Bridge, 1% for the Planet, The Yellowstone Park Foundation, GYC and TPL and others. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Yesterday I spent the day with my fishing buddy, Yvon Chouinard, fishing the Madison in the Park. Fish were on caddis emergers and PMD's. Yvon stuck with his soft hackles and I fished an Iris in olive and a PMD Sparkle Dun and did well. Yvon, Mauro and I will be working on our new book this weekend as well as filming a short DVD which will accompany the book which is to be released later this year. Stay tuned here for more.

The World Fishing Network arrives tomorrow and Cam and I will be working with their film crew for 2 days on a project that should air later this year too. When we get times and dates we will let you know in this report. We are slated to narrate this 13 part series from BRF, stay here for more as we get information.

As usual in the rest of this issue, you'll find fishing news from Yellowstone Country in the weekly Fishing Report. You can see what's hot off the vise in the Fly of the Week, get a sneak peek at some of the best materials on our tying bench in the Fly Tying Material of the Week, and stay up to date with the guide staff and their trips in the Guide Trip of the Week.

You'll be seeing a new email newsletter most every week throughout the spring and summer to keep you tuned in to all things fly fishing and fly tying in the greater Yellowstone area and beyond. Throughout the seasons, we'll keep sending you news of hatches and fishing holes around West Yellowstone. So without further delay, go ahead and jump right into the newsletter. And as always, don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email if you have any questions, or if you just want a little fish talk.
