May 17-19th Trip Report: Charkbait 2 day Exploratory with SAC Spotting Plane
5-30-2013
Mark Gillette
We found very clean blue 60.9 degree water, 90 miles southwest of Mission Bay. The water this time of year was surprisingly clean and had signs of bait and Spanish Jack. Sea conditions were less than favorable for exploring offshore. We opted to head up towards one of the other vessels who had a couple kelps for offshore yellowtail. 60 miles from Mission Bay, we stumbled upon two kelps. The first kelp we had, we had our first offshore yellowtail of the year. The second kelp surprised us with the amount of yellowtail, and we landed 12. Working the rest of the day, we trolled up about 20 Bonito. These Bonito are what we refer to as "Tuna Bone".
This sign of good water with bait, Spanish Jack and Tuna Bone at this time of year leaves us very optimistic that we will be fishing offshore sometime around the middle of next month. I would be very surprised if we didn't catch albacore this year. Of course, Mother Nature can always throw us a curve ball, but we are very optimistic aboard the Eclipse.
Day 2, we decided to run up into the Coronado Islands to get out of the weather and to try our hand at the island Yellowtail. Our morning started off very slow, but the rest of our day, we had decent fishing on Yellowtail and Barracuda. Of course the boat pressure on the islands on a Sunday made it very challenging, but our passengers and crew worked hard all day long and were rewarded with a very nice day on the islands.
