Sportfishingreport.com recently teamed up with Captain Josh Walton aboard the Pacific Quest for a 2 day San Clemente Island adventure. Water conditions have been improving and reports and recent catches of yellowtail and white sea bass at the island created high hopes for getting into some exotic action. Strong winds forecast for the weekend meant many of the other outer island options were blown out unfishable. We tanked up some squid at Catalina and continued on to San Clemente Island. Military operations shut down the backside of the island so we started day one on the front side of the island. We fished hard and found some calico bass and bottom grabbers willing to take the bait but no luck on the exotics. The backside of the island opened up later so we headed around to set up for the night. We fished into dark and had a few false alarms with the bat rays as well as one huge black seabass that swam away strong after release. The morning sun cracked the horizon and found us smack in the middle of a wide open calico bite on the anchor. Captain Walton pulled anchor and we began searching around for the yellowtail. We saw good signs of fish and a few other boats managed to hook and land a couple of fish but the school just wouldn't stay with the boats. We ended the trip with another round of wide-open calico bass fishing with quite a few 3-5 pounders landed and released. The Pacific Quest in online for both overnight open party trips and is also available for your private charter group.
