According to Captain Temo Verbboonen, our area reporter for Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, the fishing has finally taken an upward turn and the sailfish bite has been nothing short of terrific. Temo says, "schools of sailfish have arrived at the 20-mile mark and are offering phenomenal action for the anglers and as many as 5-way strikes on sailfish being ordinary". While the sailfish are not the 100-plus pounders, they have been good fighters and putting on spectacular ariel presentations. Most of the sailfish are averaging 30-40 kilos, (66 to 85 lbs.). There have been a few blue marlin, mostly smaller fish at 250-275 lbs. and a few dorado to 40 lbs.; nice quality sized fish. Even the inshore fishing picked back up this past week and was producing good catches on the Sierra, jack crevalle and bonito. "All in all, it's been a great fishing week both inshore and offshore".

IZ Climate: Mostly sunny and warm days with temps that ranged from 68 nights to 89 daytime highs and some cooling westerly surface breezes at 10-15 mph.

Sea Conditions: The water is still cooler than normal and continues to have a greenish tint to it out to about 30 miles or so before it changes to the deep blue condition. Temps from the shoreline to the 100 fathom curve at 76 to 79, rising to 80-82 for the next 20 miles or so and increasing to 83-85 outside the 1000 fathom curve at about 30 miles or so.

Best Fishing Area: This past week the fish bit very well at the 20-mile mark and the bite continues in that area, today.

Best Lure/Bait: Seems like everything was working very well for the sailfish and it was fast action on the rigged baits, live baits and even the artificials.

Bait Supply: The bait supply or both live bait and fresh rigging baits has been excellent.

Captain Temo Verboonen, owner/operator of the super panga, "Secuestro de Amor", reported an excellent bite going on right now for the inshore and offshore waters. The offshore waters are producing very good action on sailfish, along with a few striped marlin and blue marlin and the skippers are reporting a lot of action and fun fishing for the anglers. Everyday has been reflecting multiples of billfish strikes that start in the 10-12 mile mark and then, in the 15-30...... Read More
