When Albies Bite In April

4-17-2013

It was right about this time in 2006 when longfin staged their first bite of the season, just about the time of Day At The Docks. Here's the account from this site.

Brothers Bob and Chuck Taft each have an 80-foot sport boat. Bob has the Top Gun 80 and Chuck is now running the Sea Adventure 80. Both skippers were aboard Bob's rig yesterday when the first albacore of the new season struck a trolled green and blue Zucker's jig with Jeff Suttle of Encinitas on the other end of the line. Jeff gets the glory, and the rest of us can now start thinking about longfin fishing in earnest.

Three albacore were taken on the Sea Adventure 80. Two were trolled fish and one took a bait. A 25-pound bluefin was also caught on the troll, by angler Jim Cavanaugh. "We were at 116 miles," said Bob, "in 61.3-degree clean water. We saw temps from 60.5 to 61.7 degrees, and we saw five spots of bluefin. They were up and down really quick, 20 to 30-pounders."

The photo shown here is from an Independence trip in 2012.
