Fish Report for 2-28-2013
The offshore fishing at Zihuatanejo moved out 15 miles to the clean blue water
2-28-2013
Larry Edwards
"It was an interesting fishing week from Zihuatanejo", according to Captain Temo Verboonen, "with the offshore fish having moved out to about 15 miles in the clean, blue waters. There were good & not so good reports from boats that fished in the same areas, often only a couple miles apart. In one area the billfish seemed to bite well and just a mile or two away, no bite at all, even though billfish were being seen in both places. The dorado counts have slowed, too, and probably due to the full moon condition. The plus side is the bigger marlin are here and the largest fish for the week checked in at 180 kg. (380 lbs.) with several smaller fish weighed in, too".
Yellowfin tuna still showing well in the 30 mile area but the better bite is in the 40 mile area. The inshore fishing has been very poor and mainly consisted of bonito and chulas, along with a few Sierra, but only during the very early hours and then nothing. Inshore waters are green and cold.
IZ Climate: Mostly sunny and warm days with a few passing clouds and temps that ranged from 70 nights to 90 daytime highs. Nearly picture perfect!
Sea Conditions: Inshore fishing consists of very green, off-colored water with temps down to 79 degrees. Green water extends offshore, bluing up at 14-15 miles and increasing temperatures to 84-85 degrees. Mostly flat-calm seas with light & variable surface breezes.
Best Fishing Area: The offshore fishing starts at 14-15 miles, directly out from Zihuatanejo Bay, at the water color change.
Best Bait/Lure: The freshly rigged trolling baits were the bait of choice this past week in the offshore waters for the billfish and the dorado.
Bait Supply: Remains excellent, even through the full moon, with plenty of fresh baits for rigging and an excellent live bait supply.
