Trout in Deeper Water at Lake Poway but New Stock Coming

1-4-2013
Lake Poway Staff

This week, 1/2 through 1/6, has seen many limits of trout being caught from shore and on boats from Pine Point to Bucktail Bay. The Tailwalkers have abandoned the shallow hotspots like Half Moon Bay and Hidden Bay and moved to deeper water. However, the water will be reinvigorated by 1,500 pounds of trout on Wednesday, January 9 and the shoreline bite will become active again.

Boats have found success slow trolling or anchoring down in deeper water. The Powerbait/nightcrawler and Powerbait/Powerworm combos have been the most effective baits and anchoring while still fishing has proven successful. Bal Dela Cruz, pictureedd above (Los Angeles) and his fishing buddy caught double limits on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 and roped in seven nice trout on Jan.4! They were fishing 40-50 yards from shore between Bucktail Bay and Pine Point and were using green Powerbait with an orange Powerworm on a two foot leader.

Jig fishing has been slow since the trout have moved deeper but should once again become a successful method after the stock. The catfish are still biting and are in a frenzy. The Log Boom and the mouth of Hidden Bay have been the hotspots this week and many limits have been caught. If you are targeting catfish stick with mackerel and chicken liver.

The bass are deep and drop-shotting large and small plastics are working well in places like the first two barrels on the Log Boom and the Rock Pile off of Jump-Off Point. Now that the trout are in, the swimbait bite is beginning to pick up and should continue through the spring.

Just as a reminder, our next stock will be 1,500 pounds of Tailwalkers on Wednesday, January 9. I have included a detailed list of baits that work well at our lake and how to rig up the powerbait/nightcrawler rig in the most recent fish report that can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page. The concession stand will also remain closed as the new owner is making repairs and many interior changes. It will be well worth the wait and will hopefully be up and running by late December. But it the meantime, bring your own bait and snacks.
