Mike Lackey brought his Vagabond home December 3 after a ten-day trip with 17 anglers, including world record holder Mike Livingston of Sunland. Lackey took his group down to the southern banks, and also fished on The Ridge.
"Mine was the first big fish for the boat," said first-place winner Bob McKittrick of El Cajon. Bob got a 206.4-pound tuna with a sardine on a ringed Owner 5/0 Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, an Accurate 50 ATD reel and a Calstar 760 XXXH rod. McKittrick said the big tuna fought for about an hour and 15 minutes.
Rick Hobbs of San Jose won second place for a 158.8-pound tuna.
Steve Howard of Pt. Loma won third place for a 155-pound yellowfin tuna.
About a dozen large white seabass were also caught, from the 40's up to the 54.4-pound "biscuit" taken by Ralph Freas of Westminster.
Mike Livingston had the trip's best wahoo at 55.8 pounds. A Halloween-toned Marauder trolled that one up. Mike also caught a 52-pound white seabass. Lackey summed it up, "We scratched, but we put together a nice trip. This is a good group of guys to fish with, and we had some very good wahoo fishing."
