Kevin Osborne docked Intrepid at Pr. Loma Sportfishing December 3 after a remarkable ten-day trip to southern Baja. His 23 anglers had limits of school yellowfin to 70 pounds, a nice wahoo catch, "an excellent grade of yellowtail," a good wahoo catch and a brace of cows. "These are the first cows I know of that came from The Ridge," said Osborne to dock reporter Bill Roecker. "They both came on the kite with a double sardine rig.
I metered the tuna when we first got to that spot," continued skipper Kevin. "We got the two fish and then it got dark, and we had to move on. The Ridge was a good scratch, 76 degrees and blue water."
First place went to angler Leonard Chavez, pictured above of Brea, for his whopping 264-pound yellowfin tuna. He said his sardines were pinned to 6/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hooks on one of the boat's kite rigs: 130-pound Izorline, 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. "I really have to thank Alan Fay (crewman on the trip, but a well-known owner-operator in San Diego) for his help during the fight," said Chavez. "It lasted about an hour."
Doug Abdella of Redlands won second place for his 200.6-pound tuna. He got it with the same rig Chavez used during the rotation just before. Both tuna counted because two complete rotations were had on the kites, said Osborne. "He fought for 45 minutes," said Abdella. "I'm still dreaming! This is my fourth trip on the Intrepid, you can bet I'll be back."
Brian Kataoaka of Torrance won third place for a 68-pound yellowfin. It bit a pink Salas 6X Jr. Brian was fishing for wahoo.
Intrepid will be in for a night, then depart again on a 14-day trip December 4.
