Shaver lake continues to provide limits

9-21-2012
Dick Nichols

Shaver Lake continues to provide limits for most trollers. Guide Dick Nichols, of Dick's Fishing Charters in Shaver Lake said they continue to catch an average of 20 trout daily. He thinks this trend will continue into the Fall until the snow arrives. He and his clients having been bagging multiple limits in the island, Black Rock and Eagle Point areas fishing between 23 and 40 feet deep. The water temperature has dropped to 68 degrees which is is about 4 degrees cooler than when he found fish in the 44 to 48 feet deep area. Trout Buster's, with a tip of Crawler behind a weighted Mountain Flasher does the job for most trollers. Also the clear and orange Apex with a tip of crawler behind a weighted Mountain Flasher has had success. Not many trophy size trout have been weighed in the past week, but they are there and most are hiding around structures near the bottom of the lake. "You can see those big guy's down there near rocks and logs, but us trollers don't take a chance in getting the down rigger ball's into that area". He says that dropping Power Bait or crawlers, from a drifting or anchored boat may be the most effective source to catching the monsters in the deep.

Bankies are doing fairly well in the roads 1 and 2, Sierra marina areas using Power Bait or crawlers. The DFG planted in the Sierra marina area last week. Kevin Kato, of the Shaver Lake Deli fishes every day after his morning shift and catches and releases multiple limits. Others do not have that success. The lake is holding at 60% capacity, with day time temperatures in the high 70's to low 80's. The Shaver Lake trophy Trout Project will be planting about 3,500 trophies to 6 pounds before the 2013 opener in April. These big guy's will be in company of trout to 17 pounds that were planted this year by the SLTTP and Southern California Edison.

Courtright and Wishon Reservoirs continue to pump out good trout daily using about the same tackle as Shaver, but also Thomas Bouyant's, Needle Fish and Triple Teasers have done well. Courtright is producing bigger trout to 16 -18 inches.

Huntington Lake is slowly decreasing it's water capacity and is down to 80% capacity .The trout action is fair as is the bite on smaller kokanee. The kokanee are hitting Captain Jack's Super Hoochies in orange and pink with corn at about 30 feet deep. Bank fishermen are doing fair near creeks, including Rancheria Creek.
