Brian Kiyohara brought American Angler home after a four-day open trip on July 9. He tied the boat at Pt. Loma Sportfishing and weighed the best fish caught by his 28 anglers.
Steve Sato of Del Mar won first place for a 34.2-pound yellowtail. He said he got it with a sardine on a 2/0 Mustad hook. He fished with 25-pound Ande line on an old Shimano MK IV reel and an even older seven-foot rod of unknown make.
Steve Taylor of Brea won second, for a 33.6-pound yellow, and Matt Herrington of Huntington Beach won third place, for a 32.8-pound yellowtail.
Taylor also posed with his 13-year-old son Luke, who had an albacore of about the same size as the winners that was hooked and handed to him. Luke goes to Sowers Middle School in Huntington Beach, where he plays soccer and baseball.
