The Dorado bite was huge at Cabo this week

Some of the boats enjoyed a few days of limit fishing on the 10-15 lb. dorado that were found on a dead whale that was drifting on the Pacific side of Cabo and about 10 miles from shore, between the Jaime and Golden Gate Banks. According to Roberto Marquez, the whale was "loaded" with dorado and made for pretty easy fishing. In addition to the dorado bite, the yellowfin bite continued in several areas surrounding Cabo San Lucas and on both sides of the peninsula, producing good catches on the school sized yellowfin tuna. It was a great fishing week for the anglers with action in all directions from the harbor.

The billfish counts would most likely have been higher had the boats and anglers not focused so long on the easier catches of dorado and yellowfin tuna, but the name of the game is to return with happy anglers at the end of the day. The overall fish count for a total of 37 days reflected 18 stripers, (16 released) 5 sailfish released, 2 roosterfish, 74 yellowfin tuna and 66 dorado.

Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days but still, lots of sunshine and warm weather with temps from 76 nights to 100 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Water temps are good on both sides of the peninsula and ranged from 79-83 on the Pacific side and 85-86 on the Sea of Cortez side. Fairly clean water on both sides but much bluer on the Sea of Cortez side. Light and variable surface winds at 8-16 mph, mostly coming in from the southerly directions.

Best Fishing Area: Both sides of the peninsula were good fishing but the dorado counts were predominantly coming from the Pacific side off the dead whale carcass. The yellowfin tuna were coming from pods of porpoise as well as blind strikes that were separated from the animals. The marlin and sailfish were scattered about the area and on both sides of the peninsula.

Best Bait/Lure: It was an almost anything in the water got bit with the dorado and the tuna were biting well on feathers, cedar plugs, Rapala type diving lures, too. Billfish were best on live bait.

Live Bait Supply: Remains very good for the caballitos at the rate of $3.00 per bait.
