Fish Report for 7-6-2012

The rapidly changing sea conditions at Cabo are making for some tough fishing

The fishing from Cabo San Lucas has required some serious effort on the part of the crew and the anglers as the sea conditions have been changing so rapidly, almost on a daily basis, and continuous to do so. There just doesn't seem to be any 2 days alike. Good fishing and catches on one day can turn into the "skunk flag" on the next day while fishing the same location. The skippers' are having to stay right on top of the sea temps every morning, before leaving the dock for fishing, just to provide them with a minimal edge for the day. During the past 14 days we reflected 35 days fished that resulted in 22 stripers, (20 releases) 56 dorado, (about half were released due to small sizes) 1 mako shark, 22 yellowfin tuna, 6 red snapper and 5 Sierra. High billfish boat for this report was the "Tuna Time", with 5 releases for 3 days fished.

Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny, warm and clear days with an occasional passing cloud and temps that varied from 76 nights to 91 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Hot & cold water contrasts changing by the day. The Pacific side and around to San Jose Del Cabo, is cool water out to 5-7 miles from the shoreline and then rises to 75-77 degrees out to about 15 miles. Warmest waters outside the 1150 fathom spot and above the Gorda Banks, holding at about 80-84 degrees. Adding to the unstable waters is the off-color conditions throughout most of the lower Cabo area.

Best Fishing Area: No special area reported, albeit, it does appear that most of the billfish are coming from Gorda Banks areas.

Best Bait/Lure: Live bait has been best but a few billfish are being taken on the artificials, especially on the mackerel colors.

Bait Supply: Remains good, especially for the caballitos.
