Fish Report for 5-7-2012
Shaver Lake continues to see trophy sized trout, the big fish this week weighed 8.2 lbs.

Dick Nichols
Shaver Lake Sports and Young's Sporting Goods weighed in several rainbows in the 4 to 6 1/2 pound class. The big fish caught this past week was an 8.2 pound brown caught in Wishon Reservoir above Shaver. The big brown was caught by Darren Kerker of Bakersfield and weighed in at Shaver Lake Sports. He was trolling a flasher/crawler combination.
Shaver has been a hit or miss situation for many anglers this past week. Some are catching nice stringers of quality fish and others can't find a fish. Shaver guide Dick Nichols, of Dick's Fishing Charters, says trolling at 4 to 15 feet deep was paying off for many trollers including his clients, who have bagged a couple 5 pounders this past week. But the fish are finally getting more acclimated and going down to 15 feet deep or more. "I still use the Mountain Flashers in front of Trout Busters. The Trout Busters have corn on the inside hook and a piece of crawler on the back hook." The past few days, he is mixing his depths from 10 to 15 feet down with good results. Nichols says that he expects the new rainbows to start heading down in search of food and comfort soon.
He fished with Forrest Weibert and his son Keith, both from Fresno over the weekend connecting with a couple limits to 1 & 3/4 pounds, but no big trophy size fish. Nichols says there was less fishing pressure from boats this past weekend. Shore fisherman continue to catch good quality planters and an occasional trophy fish from roads #1&2, Edison campground, Bikini Cove and Dorabella Cove. Power Bait, Gulp! and crawlers seems to work the best, but a few are coming in on Kastmasters or Fish Hawks, tossed from the bank. Boat fishermen that are still fishing with Power Bait or crawlers have also had some success.
There are more plants of the trophy sized trout that have gone over 7 pounds to come. They are being spread over the next month. Shaver Lake's water capacity is at 63% and the water temperature at about 55 degrees.
