Mike Ramirez docked Excel at Fisherman's Landing October 7 after an eight-day trip with 32 anglers that ventured south to below Mag Bay looking for tuna and dorado. Tuna were hard to come by, by yellowtail and dorado were not, and a good catch of those species was made on The Ridge and offshore. Mel Fai was chartermaster.
Gerry Villalobos of Eagle Rock won first place for his 43-pound wahoo, a baitfish that took his sardine on a 3/0 Owner Mutu hook on 30-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 40-pound Big Game line and 50-pound Power Pro spectra. He said he used an Avet MXL reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.
Ric Bynum of Sacramento won second place for a 29.4-pound dorado, and Brad Zircoe of Danville won third place for a 28.2-pound "dodo."
