Fish Report for 9-29-2011
972 Black Marlin and 385 lb. Blue Marlin caught at Cabo San Lucas this week
9-29-2011
Larry Edwards
The biggest fish in our fleets for the week was taken aboard the "Tuna Time", by Tecate Angler, Rey Xeredia, a 385 lb. blue marlin, just a mile from the beach on the Pacific side of Cabo, while
trolling a green/yellow artificial. The crew and the anglers had actually watched the billfish feeding on dorado and decided to drag the artifical through the same area and successfully provoked the fish to bite. There was a bigger fish taken earlier in the week that
measured out close to a thousand pounds, (972.6, plus minus 10% by formula) taken by a pair of hearty anglers, Richard Biehl and Tom Miller, in a battle that lasted some 28 hours to land the behemoth trophy catch. A thousand pounds or not, this fish would most likely have paid off in the millions had it been in the up-coming Bisbee
Black & Blue Marlin Tournament.
Dorado were the fish of the week and varied widely in sizes from 5 pounders to 25 pounders, with mostly smaller fish inshore and the larger fish in the offshore waters, often in isolated small groups of 2-3 fish. The frigate birds were being helpful in pointing out the fish in the offshore waters and slow trolling live baits through the area was a very good way to go. The overall catches for 20 combined fishing days reflected 6 billfish that included 2 blue marlin, 3 sailfish, (released) and 1 striper released, along with 1 roosterfish, 1 skipjack tuna and 103 dorado.
Cabo Climate:
Partly cloudy days with intervals of bright sunshine and temps that ranged from 74 nights to 97 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions:
While good fishing persists on the Pacific side, the prevailing northwest wind is making the trip around the corner a little bumpy and the residual swell from Hurricane Hilary, (reduced to a tropical storm) is still evident but diminishing everyday. Water temps are excellent and stable at 86-87.5 degrees from the shore and out to about 30 miles or so and then sliding to 84 degrees. From Cabo San Lucas to the Gorda Banks the temps range from 84-86 and gradually increase to 88 in the offshore waters surrounding the 95 fathom spot and the 1150 fathom spot.
Best Fishing Area:
The Pacific side remains the place to be for most of the action.
Best Lure/Bait:
Live bait was working very well on the slow troll for the larger dorado and sailfish. The 385 lb. blue marlin was taken on an a green/yellow artificial.
Live Bait Supply:
Good supply of caballitos available.
