Dan Walsh's Rancho Leonero Report
9-15-2011
Bill Roecker
"Another great day at Rancho Leonero: my group of 16 anglers had quite a variety of fish caught today, including a sailfish and 12 yellowfin ranging 20 to 55 pounds as weighed at the Ranch's cleaning station. The attached photo is of Carlsbad's Mike Mason holding a a nice sized Pez Gallo! Most would say big deal about the roosterfish, but we got it trolling near the Lighthouse in 89-degree water The fish took a yellow and green tuna feather we had out along with four other plugs, feathers, and marauders during our hunt for the still-elusive Dorado and Wahoo. Our El Guapo captain Santos said it's only the second one he's ever caught on the troll in his life, the first one on a cedar plug 4 years ago. He's born and raised in nearby La Rivera, and at 60 years, you can bet he's pretty much seen it all, but he was speechless when Mike brought this baby in today!
"All of our fishing action this week is using Accurate reels matched to Seeker Black Steel rods of all lengths and weights. Most popular rig so far seems to be the "John Grabowski Special" 6470 (seven-foot) rod with an Accurate BX2-400 two-speed reel.
"Plan for Thursday is back to the tuna schooling under the porpoise, about 10 to 35 miles offshore. Others will be working inshore for Pargo and Pompano. Weather's great, food's great, and the Mariachi's entertained during our dinner on the outdoor patio tonight! Wish I could stay longer, but have to hit the trail back to Carlsbad on Saturday!"
