Rancho Leonero Report: Tuna!
9-13-2011
Bill Roecker
Lucas Oil Motocross producer Dan Walsh is enjoying a few days of fishing at Rancho Leonero with a group of friends who join him there each year about this time. It's Dan desire to come up with a big tuna, dorado or wahoo, and this trip he scored on tuna. Here's Dan's email from Tuesday, September 13:
"Hey Bill,
Fished two days so far on the El Guapo panga with guide Santos. The photo is a 53-pound yellowfin as weighed at the cleaning station; I dropped it right after photo taken, damn thing was heavy! Got a 41-pounder yesterday, and 3 more at 26 to 29 pounds each. The rest of the group are all getting two to four fish each per day, mostly in the 20 to 35-pound class, and Larry Mace got two in the 40-plus weight bracket Saturday and Sunday. No one really billfishing. We had to go out 35 miles the first day, and 15 or so today. Water mid 80's, bumpy and windy yesterday, calm and grease flat most of today. A slight breeze developed around 2 pm, and we had a great ride home. I nailed one of the YFT on a cedar plug today, the rest on live bait. Largest fish here so far: three guys Saturday got a 130-pound YFT, don't know the particulars, photo probably available on Rancho website. I'll bet they'll be the anglers of the week for that one! Others catching dorado, spotty on those, and lots of Roosters!"
