Mike Lackey docked his Vagabond June 17 after an eight-day trip that visited Alijos Rocks and Cedros Island. He tied up at Point Loma Sportfishing, and his 16 anglers got off, and then Lackey weighed the best fish.
"It was fabulous fishing for yellowtail at Cedros," he said, "and we had unbelievable weather for eight days, all of ???em flat calm, all the way down and back. We got the first albacore for the boat."
John Cantonwine of Campbell butt-hooked a sardine to take the winning fish, a 40-pound yellowfin tuna. He said he fished a sardine on a ringed 4/0 Eagle Claw hook made by Sumo, tied to 30-pound Big Game line on a Pro Gear 545 reel and a Calstar 700 M rod. He said the fight went 15 minutes.
Mike Maxfield of Hesperia won second place for a 38.2-pound yellowtail, and Ray Sandoval of Long Beach took third place, for a 36-pound yellowfin.
