Bill Roecker
Roy Rose docked Frank LoPreste's Royal Polaris at Fisherman's Landing August 24 after a three-day Hi's Tackle trip to the "local" tuna grounds some 130 miles south. His anglers made a catch of mixed tuna, with albacore winning two of the three top spots in the jackpot.
Dennis Doi, in photo of La Palma won first place for a 25.8-pound albie. He said he got it with a sardine on a 3/0 Owner Flyliner hook tied to 30-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 80-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 665 two-speed reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6465 H rod.
Dan Mansir of the Napa-Sonoma area won second place for a 25.6-pound bluefin, and Andy Smith of Napa-Sonoma won third place for a 24-pound albacore.
Royal Polaris headed back out the same day to fish on a five-day trip with AFTCO's Bill Shedd, his daughter Chrissie and her husband Rick Maxa aboard.
