American Angler's Sport Chalet eight-day trip with chartermaster Brad LeMoine returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing June 6 when Sam Patella docked the boat. There were 22 anglers aboard, including the father and son team of Luke and Ryan Burson of Laguna Niguel. The pair got the first albacore and bluefin tuna of the new season, approximately 230 miles south of San Diego, in an area that often provides the first tuna.
Luke got his 16-pound albie on a small Sumo bullet head trolling jig in skipjack color, purple and black. Ryan Burson said his 25-pound bluefin bit a sardine on 25-pound line. There were two albacore and ten bluefin caught. One of the bluefin weighed 32.9 pounds, caught by Joe Ferris of Carlsbad.
The trip also produced near-limits of yellowtail. Dennis Saylors of Seal Beach shared first place for a 39.4-pound yellow he got with a sardine on the dropper loop with a 12-ounce sinker and a 4/0 Owner ringed Super Mutu hook. He fished with 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound spectra backing on a Penn 30 S reel and a Calstar six-foot rod.
Bill Randall of Foothill Ranch tied Saylors with another 39.4-pound 'tail. He said his also bit on a sardine/dropper combo, with a 16-oz. sinker and a 5/0 Gamakatsu hook. He used 60-pound Izorline on a Tiagra 30 reel and a Calstar 765 ML rod. The pair split the first and second place prize.
Ed Hardy of Laguna Hills won third place for a 37.8-pound yellowtail.
