The Shad population is exploding and the bass are on the bite at Lake Poway

Lake Poway Staff

The shad population has exploded. There are big bait balls moving all along the shoreline with schools of bass feasting a plenty. The bass bite has been best off the fish float and Bucktail Bay. Plastics and Swim Baits have been doing best. The trout bite is still going strong as well. We saw a lot of limits being caught. A slow troll on a deeper drop off through the middle of the lake worked the best. Nightcrawlers and powerbait have been the trout's bait of choice. In Hidden Bay and Bucktail Bay the bluegill and sunfish are hitting well on nightcrawlers. Congratulations to Louie Ianniello for landing the biggest bass in March / April with the 9 pounder he caught just before the deadline. He will be getting a custom rod and reel combo from Fisherman's Outpost. For the month of May Fisherman's Outpost is at it again. They will be giving away a custom drop shot rod for the biggest bass by weight. You have until May 29th to set the mark. There is one rule for this contests though, no live bait. All bass to be weighed cannot be caught with live bait. Good luck to you all. The water temp is 64 in 25 feet of water.

NIGHT FISHING resumes at Lake Poway on Friday June 10, 2011 and will run until Saturday August 13.. During Night Fishing Lake Poway will be open until 11:30pm for Shoreline Fishing and 11:00pm for Boat Fishing. The annual Midnight Catfish Craze will be on July 8, 2011 from 4:00pm to 12:00am.

Bass are still plentiful but are starting to move off the shoreline. On Wednesday April 20th, we stocked our final round of Trout, 1,500lbs. Despite the recent stock the Trout bite has been slow. Most have been caught using a combo of powerbait and nightcrawlers. The hot spot is Boulder Bay. Trolling across the middle of the lake has been best during the middle to end of the day. The bass bite still remains the best bite though they are...... Read More
