Mazatlan Fishing Report
1-20-2011
Larry Edwards
The offshore waters, even during the full moon period, seemed a
little more productive this past week with 61% of the boats landing a
striper and a number of boats having more than a single opportunity
at a billfish. The inshore fishing remained good, albeit, slowed up
a little from the weeks before. The overall combined fish counts for
18 offshore fishing days reflected 11 Pacific striped marlin and two
dorado and the inshore super pangas reflected 13 jack cravelle, 2 red
snappers, 5 baquetas, 41 mojarres, 15 roncachos, 2 palometas, 4
pargo, 2 cabrilla and 1 cochito for 8 days of fishing effort.
Mazatlan Climate: Mostly sunny and warm days and unusually cold nights. The temps ranged from 43 nights, (very cold for this area) to 79 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Cooler and greener waters inshore at 68 degrees and gently rising to 72 at about 10-12 miles, then to 74 degrees at about 15 miles out to the south of the Marina El Cid. Heavy greenish tint to about 12-15 miles and then cleaning to a light green tint and good clarity.
Best Fishing Area: Still no concentration of fish but for the most part, the boats were fishing out to the south of the Marina El Cid at varied distances that ranged from 18-27 miles or so.
Best Lure/Bait: The rigged baits were doing well for the stripers and both dorado, too.
Bait Supply: Good bait supply of mullet for the rigged baits and plenty of shrimp and squid for the super pangs.
