Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report

1-20-2011
Larry Edwards

I just got off the telephone with Roberto Marquez, the owner of the Fish Cabo Fleet and he explained that the fishing this past week was unusually difficult and poor for the Cabo San Lucas areas and that it made no difference as to which side of the peninsula one fished on, it was equally poor for the catching. About the only for sure fish to bite have been the inshore catches for Sierra and small game fishes, including a mixture of skipjack and bonito. Even the yellowfin tuna are being caught close in for the most part and when they are offshore, they have not been overly cooperative and eager to bite. Then, the full moon has wreaked havoc on the bait supply and only got back to some normality, yesterday, when the bait boat came in with a good supply of mackerel. Along with all of that good news comes the cooling water currents and the net result is very difficult fishing for the customers. Our overall combined fish counts for 19 days fished reflected 4 stripers, (2 released) 2 dorado, 25 yellowfin tuna, 5 Sierra and 106 skipjack and bonito mixed.

Cabo Climate: Mostly sunny and pleasant days with cool nights and temps that varied from 54 nights to 77 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: San Cristobal, on the Pacific side and around to the Gorda Banks toward the Sea of Cortez side, the water temps were cool at 69 degrees and then gently rising to about 71 just a few miles offshore. Warmest water was a small band about 5 miles wide that stretched from the 1150 fathom spot to the Cabrillo Seamount that held steady at 72-72.5 degrees. Cleanest waters were out to the south of Cabo and mostly along the thousand fathom curve. Mostly light & variable surface breezes.

Best Fishing Area: Almost all of the boats continue to fish on the Pacific side of Cabo and while there is no fish concentration, that side is producing more fish than the Sea of Cortez side.

Best Lure/Bait: Live bait for th billfish, feathers for the yellowfin and Rapalas for the Sierra, Bonito and skipjack.

Bait Supply: Good for mackerel but short on caballitos.
