Mazatlan Fishing Report
1-6-2011
Larry Edwards
It appears that some of the stripers are moving across the Sea of
Cortez and taking up residence outside the Mazatlan area. While
still not too much going on for Mazatlan, the bite reflected about a
50% billfish catch rate for those anglers that tested the offshore
fishing areas and the area's waters remain at viable billfish temps,
(74-76 degrees) with respectable claritty. The combined fishing
report for 20 offshore fishing days reflected 9 stripers and 2
dorado, but the skippers were reporting seeing good numbers of
billfish and that may bode well for the coming days. The inshore
catches were again very good and reflected 8 ccorvina, 27 jack
cravelle, 1 baqueta, 54 pargo, 104 mojarres, 1 roncacho, 2 cochitos
and 1 huachinango for a total of 8 days fished.
Mazatlan Climate: Mostly cloudy with cold nights, (down to 50 degrees) and warm days, (up to 81 degrees).
Sea Conditions: Mostly favorable with good temps holding from 70 inshore and rising to 74 at about 10 miles and then gradual increase to 76 degrees at about 20 miles. Inshore waters are greenish off- color and changes to clean with greenish tint to about 20 miles, then bluing from there and outbound.
Best Fishing Area: There was no specific offshore area that reflected a concentration and billfish were being seen over a wide area out to the southwest.
Best Bait/Lure: The rigged mullet were working best.
Bait Supply: Good supply for bait for offshore and inshore areas.
