AT CEDROS ISLAND (110710)!!! I have a story for you tonight. Today we were fishing around Cedros island, it was slow. We stopped on some school size fish out in deep water, but that wasn't what we were looking for, so we poked along the lee side up shallow looking for those Premium grade Yellowtail that we associate this island with. Deckhand Sammy asked if he could try out my jig rod, maybe catch a calico. The next thing I see is Sammy bent over and a spectra flying off the reel. Okay, you know the drill, go ahead and hand it off. Well, Big Bill Billups was standing there and just so happened to be asking questions pertaining to the Seeker jig rod that I use, this was his chance to find out first hand. Big Bill took over from Sammy and after a tour around the Shogun had the big yellow up to color. Once the gaff was laid into it and the fish hefted over the rail, we found it weighed in at 46 pounds. Wow, that is a nice one on the surface iron! Good going Sammy and good going to Bill for landing that beast. Now onto my pitch. Ha. The new jig in the picture(not that I want the tackle shops mad at me, again) is what Norman christened the "Pit Viper" , and it works. Obviously, it is hanging out of the face of a 46 pound Yellowtail. We started using this jig a couple of months ago and it has really produced. If you are nice to your local tackle shop they may be able to get some for you. I would suggest it. Next, you have heard about how I use spectra to wire 99% of the time on my jig rod, I can't see me going back to mono. It works great for me, but what I would like to state is the reel that holds the spectra for me. Jerry Downie the "Reel Man" customized a Newell 533 to a much more narrow "522". I can't say enough good things about this reel, it is absolutely my favorite reel to throw jigs with, no problems what so ever. In the past several months this one reel has landed lots and lots of Yellowtail with maybe ten over 30 pounds, in the past few weeks it has since been converted to a Wahoo catching machine with 'hoos way other 50 pounds to it's credit. Kudos to the "Reel Man" he is shaping the way we throw jigs. Big Fish Happen, Bruce A. Smtih
