Royal Polaris Sportfishing Trip Update (110110)

Bill Roecker

GOOD FISHING AGAIN (110110)!!! Roy Rose docked Royal Polaris at Fisherman's Landing November 1, ending the Hi's Tackle Box 10-day trip with 31 anglers aboard. "We had good fishing again," said Roy, "with nice catches at all the spots we went to, including The Ridge, Alijos Rocks and Cowtown, although we only got calves down there. We ended up with near-limits of Tuna and Yellowtail. Wahoo fishing was slow, though." Willy Leung of San Francisco won first and second places in the jackpot for tuna of 85 and 81.7 pounds. He told dock reporter Bill Roecker he got the big one in 20 minutes, on a sardine and a 3/0 VMC circle hook tied to 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 50-pound Line One Spectra. He used a TLD 20 reel and a Calstar 6465 M rod. Bob Dutcher of Westminster won third place for a 71.6-pounder. He said it was his best. Stan Ellis of Orange had the trip's best Yellowtail, a 49.6-pound mossback that bit on a flylined sardine at Alijos Rocks. Seven-year-old Shawn Trowbridge Jr. (his dad is owner-operator of the Legend at Seaforth Sportfishing) got his first Wahoo on a red and gold Raider jig. The skinny weighed 46 pounds, a good one for anybody. Young Shawn finished it off in about ten minutes, said Shawn senior. The boy goes to Christian Unified grade school in Granite Hills. He caught numerous other fish on his first long range trip.
