Shogun Sportfishing Trip Update (102510)
10-26-2010
Bill Roecker
BIG BREAK FOR BIG WAHOO (102510)!!! A major temperature break between the 13 Spot and the 23 Spot prompted Shogun skipper Bruce Smith to fish on the warm side. He told dock reporter Bill Roecker that Wahoo fishing was okay on one day but very good the next, after schools of skinnies apparently moved in overnight.
The Wahoo were both numerous and large. The two best troll fish weighed 81 and 82 pounds on the certified scales at Fisherman's Landing when the boat arrived October 25 after its seven-day trip.
Rick Hall of Bakersfield got the best Wahoo to come in so far this season, at 82 pounds. He caught it on the troll with a "Halloween" marauder in orange and black. He said it came on 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on a Tiagra 50 reel and a Calstar 6455 XXH rod. It was on the deck in seven minutes, he said.
Jimmie Roberts, also of Bakersfield, took the other toad, an 81.4-pounder that bit a purple and orange Marauder.
The Shogun's wonderful catch of skinnies allowed Wahoo to sweep the jackpot. Jon Jagger of Phoenix won first place for a 58-pounder that took a sardine on a 4/0 Mustad hook on 40-pound wire and 40-pound Izorline, on a Newell 440 reel and a seven-foot rod.
Jeff Harris of Culver City won second place for a 57-pounder, and Jeff Pew of Culver City won third place for a 55-pounder.
