Shogun Sportfishing Trip Update (101710)
10-17-2010
Bill Roecker
STEADY AT THE ROCKS (101710)!!! "We had a steady scratch at The Rocks," said Shogun skipper Norm Kagawa at Fisherman's Landing October 17. "They were running 40 to 80 pounds. We found plenty of Yellowtail at the 13 Spot, along with some Pargo, and we picked up a handful of premium Yellowtail at Cedros."
The trip was an eight-day open-party expedition with 27 anglers.
Bruce Saurer of Whittier won first place for an 80-pound Yellowfin Tuna he suckered with a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Owner Mutu hook. He said he fished with 40-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 65-pound Big Game Spectra on an Avet SX Raptor reel and a Seeker Hercules 700 M rod.
"It took an hour," said Bruce, who added that he pulled on the fish with the rod pointed down on the rail.
Chris Barth of Fountain Valley won second place for a 77.6-pounder, and Mark Nakahama of San Jose won third place for a 77-pound Alijos Rocks Yellowfin Tuna he bagged on a chunk bait, when the fish bit it only 40 feet from the boat.
Ernie Esparza of Huntington Beach won the Rollo jackpot for the trip's largest Yellowtail, a 35.6-pound mossback that bit on a Salas 7X in sardine swirl. He posed with Nakahama for a lineup shot.
