It doesn't get much better than this. Hot calm weather, smooth seas and an historical sea bass bite that shows no signs of slowing all contributed to making last week one of the best in memory.
Anglers working the southern end of the Monterey Bay, from Lovers Point to the "Hotel" area in Seaside continue to pull in fish after fish. Succeeding waves of white sea bass have been pouring into that section of the Bay, feeding on abundant squid in an extended spawn mode. The bite has been going on for nearly eight weeks now. It is red hot. This may be a situation of bigger stronger Southern California fish following the squid into the bay, because the sea bass being caught range from 30 to over 60 pounds!
Captain Jimmy Sportfishing brought in a 48 and a 53-pounder on Wednesday, and caught three for Sunday again around 50 pounds each. Gerry Brookes from Reel Sportfishing gaffed three weighing up to 48 pounds on Tuesday, and the private boats are doing as well or better. Witness the Fish Zombie with John Molina at the helm. He and partner John Thomas sped across the bay and were returning by noon with five sea bass in the box, all in the 50-pound range.
Thomas' technique is to flyline the freshest squid possible (live squid is always best if you can jig some up) on a double-snelled 5 /0 octopus hook monofilament leader. Put the rod in the rodholder with reel engaged and set a medium heavy drag. You need to be patient when the sea bass takes off on an arrow-straight run. Make sure your reel has plenty of line for that first run.
Most impressive this week may be Daren DeLuca's 50-pound hog caught from his Ocean Kayak. The fight took 20 minutes. When the fish came to the surface, DeLuca says, "my jaw dropped, what a beast!"
For those who want to stay closer to home, both Capitola Boat and Bait and Bayside marine report limit-style rockfishing on our local reefs, and some decent halibut catches from the Mile Buoy area as well as the pocket beaches off the North Coast.
