Headed over to Al the Sports Barber's place for a quick cut and the latest on the local fish report. Al said his skiff trip yesterday found lots of birds up south of Dana Point, but he couldn't get a lick on plastic or iron. Turns out it was all small thresher sharks in feeding on bait, or at least that was a report verified by the sight of a "big game hunter" in the launch ramp parking lot with a 30-pound baby longtail.
Al said the water was 62 to 64 still despite the front that came through over the weekend, but the front was enough to keep the bite down to just a half-dozen calicos released
I've been checking my sportfishingreport.com iPhone app for news of a renewed tuna bite in local waters, but I guess it might take another day or two, or at least a break in this crappy weather. I can't recall having these conditions in September -- ever. A true rip roaring front -- yes those I've seen -- June gloom for five months. Never.
The fish are still here, though, or else they still wouldn't be catching marlin today. Checked out www.catalinaclassic.com and Shimano's Robby Gant had already released a fish on the Ahi Nui and Barry Brightenburg of Fish Trap Lures was back at it again with a hookup on the Shannon Rose. The Reel Nice 'N Easy already has $30k in the bag with the biggest of two marlin weighed in yesterday at Kona Kai. Yep, it's out of San Diego again, with the awards party slated for the Bali Hai.
Also, the New Lo-An got back to Point Loma Sportfishing with some bluefin despite the lumpy conditions. Both Point Loma and Fisherman's Landing have 1 1/2-day trips scheduled starting Wednesday afternoon and the forecast offshore is fantastic. Winds start off at 10 knots or less Thursday morning and then it's that beautiful word "variable" all the way into Saturday and beyond. It's supposed to be cooking hot inland, so get out on the water and put some meat in the freezer.
