LET'S TALK ALIJOS (091810)!!! The host of Let's Talk Hookup is Pete Gray, who chartermastered the seven-day trip to Alijos Rocks with 23 anglers and skipper Frank LoPreste that returned to Fisherman's Landing September 18. Pete won the Rollo Jackpot for a 46-pound Wahoo, but couldn't be at the dock for photos in the dark Saturday morning because he had to make his radio show.
Christie Shedd of AFTCO was also on the trip, her first long range experience. She liked it very much, especially the quarters and the food and other accommodations long rangers take for granted. It wasn't the Wahoo, the Tuna or the Yellowtail she caught that made her proudest, however. For Christie, the highlight was winning her Polar Bear Badge, for taking a dip in the refrigerated seawater tank. Christie posed with her new patch at the top of the dock.
"We're going back in August," said Christie, whose wedding to "Rock Cod" Rick Maxa, Gray's co-host, is upcoming in a couple of weeks. "and maybe we'll take this trip again, too."
Accurate and Izorline pro staffer Kathy Rounds was aboard, too, and caught the trip's only White Seabass, a 46-pounder.
"We had beautiful weather," she added, "coming and going."
Bill Golden of Bonita won first place for a 77-pound Tuna. Ed Leland of Westminister won second place for a 76-pounder, and Gary Sarka of Long Beach won third place for a 74-pounder. The best fish weighed on the dock belonged to Leland, who got his 76-pounder with a sardine on a 4/0 ringed Owner Gorilla on 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon. he used 80-pound Izorline Spectra, a Talica 16 reel and a Calstar 700 H rod. He posed with Ernie Pineda of Corona (72.6 pounds) and Bob Wolfson of Dana Point, who had one that weighed 72 pounds.
Hot stick Chico Leonard of Alpine got eight Wahoo: one on a Tar Baby, two on sardines and five on gold Raider jigs with pink decals.
"Whenever somebody would get bit off, I'd go up to the bow and cast," said Chico. "Look at these Sheephead! I love 'em." He held up a brace of lunker wrasse.
