Lake Sabrina Fishing Report

A few more flowers in bloom this week and they're purple - the Canadian Lilac and a beautiful Iris. With both the white lilac and purple lilac in bloom, the little trail down to the launch ramp smells heavenly. We've also got a bit of pine pollen and lots of other pollens in the air which is causing lots of people the sniffles and itchy eyes. If you're susceptible to allergies, don't forget your allergy remedies - it will make your trip to the Sierras so much more enjoyable. The catching this week was a bit on the slow side - not sure why - maybe the lake is too high and the water murky and we did have a full moon. Department of Fish and Game stocking quantities and qualities are much improved this season - so there's lots of nice fish to be caught. Fishing the inlets with NightCrawlers, PowerBait or jigs brought in a few stringers. The movers (that would be the trollers) were using flashers and a NightCrawler or a lure with a bit of red - such as the Red and Gold Thomas Buoyant or the tried and true Super Duper. Those sittin' on a rock and fishing from shore were using PowerBait or Salmon Eggs. And those adrift on the Lake were seen using NightCrawlers or PowerBait slowly floating around the rock piles or over the shoreline between the two natural lakes.

The 3rd Annual Bishop Creek Canyon summer classic trout derby has come to an end and thank you all for making it another success. Our heartful thanks also to the Bishop Chamber and inyo County. We had a bit of slow start, but lots of you entered and some of you caught that tagged fish. One of those was Frank Hidalgo of Pico Rivera. He pulled in a 4-1/4 lbs. tagged Alper on Rainbow PowerBait right at the launch ramp. Alan Miyatake of Los Angeles caught a 2-3/4 pound Rainbow on a NightCrawler. Teresa O'Malley sent in her picture of a beautiful Alper caught on a pearl mini jig & released back at the DingleBerry Inlet. The weather is pretty much the same as last week - Breath-taking - the highs are in the mid 70s and the lows in the high 40s & no w-i-n-d or s-n-o-w what else could you ask for. There is a slight chance of some afternoon thunder-boomers. You can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.

All USFS campgrounds are now open. The price this year to camp at the Forest Service campgrounds are $21.00. The only USFS campground that accepts reservations is Four Jeffery. There 31 sites available for reservations: you can book on-line at www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777. All other campsites at Four Jeffery and the other campgrounds are first come, first served. There is a full hook-up RV campground - Creekside RV park which is on the road to South Lake. The skeeters are making they're annual return - best come prepared with the bug juice. Remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen. You've got that sun coming at you in ALL directions and the rays from the water are deadly. Wash your hands after applying sunscreen, bug juice or any other fu-fu juice. The juice you apply will taint your tackle and bait. Lake Sabrina Boat Landing has gone to summer hours. That means we'll be opening at 7:00am and stay open until 7:00pm. The Café is now open daily for breakfast at 7:00am to 11:00am with lunch being served from 11:00am to 4:00pm. We have homemade pie, sodas, beer, wine, coffee, tea and hot cocoa. The Lake Sabrina crew is looking forward to seeing you all this year.
