THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND FISH CABO FLEET

Can someone ask Ray Cannon where the "Fish Pileup" is? It sure hasn't been in Cabo San Lucas and it makes for a difficult write up each week, just waiting for something to break loose in this area, known for it's incredible fishing; especially the billfish action and much more. The only boat in our fleet that landed marlin this week was the "Gaviota IV", with Captain Octavio Castillo, landing the entire billfish count for the week, all two of'em. Captain Castillo also landed the biggest yellowfin tuna for the week, and 80-pounder. If I just talked about this one boat, I could probably make it sound like a pretty good fishing week, but that was unfortunately, not the case. The overall fish counts for 23 combined fishing days reflected 2 stripers released, 2 dorado, 1 mako shark, 25 Humbolt squid, 1 skipjack tuna, 55 yellowfin tuna, 3 roosterfish and 113 Sierra.

Cabo Climate: Just excellent! Bright, sunshiny days and clear skies with temps from 61 nights to 81 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Typical NW surface breezes but fishable on both sides of the peninsula. Water temps on the Pacific side were 69-72 from Golden Gate Bank to Jaime Bank and in to Cabo San Lucas. A long temp break, running NE to SW and about 10 miles offshore from Cabo was at 74-75, with very good clarity.

Best Fishing Area: Offshore, there was no concentration in any spot, not even in the warmer waters and the boats fished in many locations over the course of the week.

Best Lure/Bait: The 2 billfish were taken on live bait. The tuna were mostly on feathers but the bigger fish on the live bait.
Live bait supply: Remains good with a mix of mackerel and caballitos.
