What a difference a week makes. After a long stretch of great weather, both on land and on the water, this week took a turn for the worse, and it looks like it is just the beginning of what could be tough conditions for next week.
There was not much coverage in the local waters this week, but reports from Catalina were slow. Live squid was tough to get, so most fishing the island had to rely on fin bait or fresh dead squid. Along the coast, with the rock fish closure most had to scratch away at sand bass and calico bass. The giant squid fishing still remains good on the 9 mile bank.
We had our Let's Talk Hook-up trip aboard the Legend this week. Captain Shaun Trowbridge took the anglers off Punta Colonet in Baja California and had a fair trip. Current was very fast, which made it challenging to stay on the spots. The anglers aboard did manage 250 assorted rock fish, with some reds and plenty of big whitefish. The Legend will be running these trips every Friday night from Seaforth Sportfishing. If you are looking for a good winter getaway, watch the weather and get out on the water when the conditions are right.
We are just two weeks away from the annual San Diego Anglers Bay Bass Tournament. This is the fishing event of the winter, and there may even be spots left to get in on this annual winter classic. Rock Cod Rick has been practicing hard in the bay, and says the big sand bass are biting, so it should be a good tournament.
Long Range boats have had a fantastic week of big fish on the lower banks. Several 200-300 pound tuna are hitting the decks, and with good water conditions expected to continue, this amazing fishing should go on through the winter.
Our Shimano/Let's Talk Hook-up on the water seminar schedule is up on our web site on the trips page http://www.hookup1090.com/trips.asp. We have 2- 1 1/2 day trips on the Searcher, a 3 day on the Searcher and the popular Islander Kayak mother ship trip. Sign up soon as these trips fill fast.
If you want to hear all the fishing action as fresh as it gets, listen to Let's Talk Hook-up this Saturday morning from 7am to 9am. Pete Gray and Rock Cod Rick Maxa will be in the XX studio with president of Shimano American- Dave Pfeiffer. This is a rare opportunity to talk to the guy that runs it all in the U.S. Dave is also a hard core skiff angler here in southern California, and will provide some great ideas on how to catch more fish. Sunday from 7am to 9am Pete and Rick will be back in the XX 1090 studio with Brandon Hayward from Western Outdoor News and his friend Danny Wade. Brandon is one of the top writers in southern California, and is an expert angler. He will offer up his insight on how you can catch more fish. Danny is considered by many to be the "guru" of surface iron fishing. He will likely have good tips on picking the right iron, and how to catch fish on it. Of course lots of long range and local live reports to go along with all the information, plus your phone calls. It will be a great weekend to tune into Let's Talk Hook-up Saturday and Sunday- 7am to 9am on XX 1090AM or listen live on line at www.hookup1090.com. You can also listen to our archives from previous shows on our archives page.
