Since the weather was so beautiful, I felt the best way to take advantage of the opportunity was to call Jeff Grodin at Captain Hook's Sportfishing and book a trip with Greg Ewart, Owner and Operator of the Island Spirit. We shoved off at 6am sharp with a group of twelve anglers. It was a little choppy with mixed swells on the way out, but we arrived at the fishing grounds to some excellent conditions! We first soaked our lines in the Anacapa/Santa Cruz Gap and immediately landed several lings and limited out on some nice grade, angry fighting Widows. You've been Rockfishing before, but until you've experienced Rockfishing Island Spirit style, you won't know what you're missing. We were hitting big balls of Widow Rockfish at approximately 100 to 200 feet deep in depths of approximately 350. Let some line out, and slowly find the fish like an elevator! We had a blast! After limiting out, we made a run for Santa Cruz and fished the kelp in high hopes of some Flatties, Calicos and whatever else we may find. Greg and the Crew of the Island Spirit worked hard to put us on the fish and provided a memorable experience. Official SFR Fishcount was 12 Anglers, 3/4 Day, 4 Lingcod, 18 Vermilion Rockfish, 120 Rockfish. With a prestine reputation as a mover and shaker, Captain Greg Ewart brings a whole new meaning to the word SPIRIT! Get out there and see for yourself! Call Captain Hook's for reservations at 805-382-6233. For copies of any photos, please drop me a line at Homan@sportfishingreport.com.
Tight Lines and see you on the water!
