Water Conditions

Due to the recent cooler weather, early fall fishing conditions are starting to appear and the fishing on the Truckee River has been improving. The lower temperatures from last week have led to the appearance of larger fish. With the flows being at a good rate this time of year, the trout should be widely spread throughout the entire river system. This week, the flows on the Truckee River are 266 CFS out of Lake Tahoe, 315 CFS near Glenshire, and 503 CFS near Farad.

Tips for the Week

As summer comes to a close, crayfish shed their old shells and become a primary food source for trout in the Truckee River, particularly the larger ones. As a result, fly fishers nymphing with different crawdad patterns are experiencing success. Anglers are recommended to use a 9 to 10-foot fly rod with a heavier leader, as strikes on crayfish flies tend to be aggressive.

Suggested Flies or Lures

Some favorites to try this week on the Truckee River are Haddon’s Dead Drift Crayfish, TJ Hookers, Clawdad Krafts, Black Hares Ear, or Dirty Birds.
