Victory at Alijos

Norm Kagawa docked his Shogun Sunday morning, as a windy day began to build in San Diego. The boat's 17 anglers returned to Fisherman's Landing from an eight-day trip with limits of yellowfin tuna and near-limits of yellowtail. The tuna were from Alijos Rocks and the yellowtail came both from the Rocks and Cedros Island.
"Right away, I knew it was gonna be good," said skipper Kagawa. "On the first day we picked up 20 fish on a drift, and then had a steady pick all day on the North Ridge. That bite went until 5:30. It was almost too easy. We went out to the bank after dinner to fish for yellowtail.
"The next day we picked all day on sardine fish, 40 to 60-pounders. We fished three full days in 66.7 degree water, and then headed up to Cedros Island. We got there at lunch and did very well on yellowtail of 20 to 30 pounds. They bit the surface jig, bait and the yoyo iron.
"I fished a sardine pattern blue and white 7X, with 50-pound Izor XXX on a Newell 533 and an Ulua long rod. It was so much fun catching those big yellows that way. The water at Cedros was 62 and clean at the South End and 64, with good sign of yellowtail, up at the North End. Yeah," said Norm, "it was an excellent eight-day trip, one of our best, and my best opener ever."
Brad Snyder of La Jolla won first place and the Rollo jackpot, for an 89.1-pound yellowfin tuna and a 36.3-pound yellowtail.
"That tuna was a tough fish," he said. "It took me about 20 minutes to get him in."
Snyder used a sardine on a ringed 8/0 Super Mutu hook, tied to 60-pound Ande line. He fished with a TLD 30 reel and a Calstar 765 L rod.
Dave VanVoorhis of Riverside was second, for an 89-pound tuna that took a sardine on 40-pound line. Mark Frankenberger of Dalton, GA took third place for am 85.6-pounder, and Heather McNeil of Perris had an honorable mention tuna of 77.7 pounds.
Seeker rep David Archibald was aboard. He remarked, "Norm said they were there, and they chewed the paint off the hull! All you had to do was get it in the water to get bit."
