Shasta Lake Report

3-20-2024
Jeff Goodwin

Shasta Lake is experiencing some great springtime waether and the trout bite is pretty good too!  The lake temps have come up into the low 50's and that has really helped to get some of the bigger browns and rainbows biting a bit more consistently this past week.  We're catching multi pound rainbows and browns every day and have been averaging 12+ keepers for the fish box most days as well.  The most notable observation I've made this spring is the average size of the trout this year.  I think the abundance of Shad in the lake has helped these fish with a notable growth spurt this winter.  Most of our trout have been caught trolling spoons in the top 20' of the lake.  Water color has been great all year but with a rising lake, we're seeing a bit more debris now.  I've fished several areas of the lake and have caught trout everywhere.  We're also starting to see some bass caught while trolling now as well.  I'm excited about this summer trout fishery and will start to submit additional reports at the end of May when we get back on Shasta after our Sacramento River Striped bass season ends.  Thank you!
