Trolling for Smallmouth on Lake Del Valle
10-25-2023
Del Valle Marina
The weather couldn’t have been better for trolling for Smallmouth Bass at Lake Del Valle on Oct. 24th. After a slow start in the morning, the fish finally started biting after 12:30. I landed and safely released a total of six fish, three Smallmouth Bass and three Bluegills. The largest of the Smallies weighed 1.8 pounds (pictured here with Paul). All the fish were caught in the 25 to 35 foot water column at a depth of 20’ to 25’ on various 1/4 ounce Panther Martin spinners. To get the lures to the depth of 20’ - 25’ I used lead core line tied to a 40’ Fluorocarbon leader. The fish were scattered all over the lake so there was not a particular hot spot to speak of. The water surface temperature continues to slowly cool down each week as we get into the fall season. Today’s surface temperature ranged from 67 - 68 degrees with improved water clarity as you move north towards Heron Bay.
We’re looking forward to a few more good weeks of chasing Smallies before switching gears to troll for Rainbow Trout!
