The Rainbow Trout bite has gone wide open on Big Bear Lake! With surface temps still holding in the mid to upper forties depending on the time of day, these fish are starting to come out of their winter slumber and go on the bite.
Trollers working the Trout Triangle bordered by Eagle Pt., the Solar Observatory and Gibralter Pt. are scoring limits of hefty holdover trout in thirty minutes. With oxygen levels high top to bottom the trout are active all over the lake. Anglers working the western end of the lake near Boulder Bay and old Gray's Landing are seeing the same results.
Lead core line trolled from one to three colors with Luhr Jensen Needlefish and Speed Traps, or Thomas Buoyants in tow are doing well. If you do not have lead core, trolling straight mono from a spinning reel, with jointed or countdown Rapalas will do just as well. Silver and black or black and white color patterns have been the most productive.
Shore fishing remains strong as the bigger fish prowl the warmer shallow water in search a snack. Use a sliding egg sinker system and present Eagle Claw Nitro, Power Bait and inflated night crawlers off the bottom for some good action along the shore. The shoreline at Juniper Pt. has produced limits while larger fish have shown west of Windy Pts. Be sure to vary leader length from 1 foot to 4 feet until you find the zone the fish are feeding in.
BIG FISH OF THE WEEK: honors go to Damian Paez of Costa Mesa who landed a 5lb. 3oz. rainbow while trolling a Rapala off of Papoose Bay.
