Not the fast action pace as the prior day as we shifted back into bluefin mode working to establish a new trend stationary rather than continuously on the move. Capturing a few, while untold thousands of their buddies passed beneath the hull, they ultimately won the standoff. Patience has its limits; mine admittedly narrowed by the miles of bluefin jumping and crashing around.

Returning to variety mode we took advantage of the supermarket like zone we were in while targeting bluefin and yellowtail. Just about anything that made it below the “mixed layer” resulted in tasty prize. A nice bonus that we could have but didn’t abuse the variety element was an appreciated extra.

Another nice afternoon hit on the big yellows set up a final hurrah that concluded the voyage on a note of success, but not quite the big bang we were hoping for. Again miles of bluefin in every size class tormented us in their presence and nigh complete refusal to acknowledge our offerings. To our delight however a couple mustered the courage to take us on providing a chance for one of two anglers to settle a score. Bluefinless, after the dreaded “mala suerte” struck in the form of hook pulls and chew offs, fortune shifted in the eleventh hour for the downtrodden proving yet again the value of determination.

Heading for the barn laden with a beautiful catch of premium, RSW held bluefin tuna and yellowtail we extend our thanks to Let’s Talk Hookup as the sponsors of this annual four day summer run. Final voyage photo features first time Royal Star angler Richard Hawkshaw with this fine, daytime coaxed bluefin tuna taken on the flyline sardine. And this catch came with a bonus. Lodged deep in its mouth was the disco knife jig seen in the image. The second time around wasn’t so much for this crafty devil. And, Richard used the bonus jig to secure another dandy, his personal best, that night!
