Happy Klamath Steely New Year !
1-5-2023
Scott Caldwell
2023 is starting off right where 2022 ended. Klamath Steelies are on the bite and putting that awesome steely smile on my clients faces.
My most recent trip on the river, my client Debbie won all the bragging rights from her son Luke. Debbie caught and released the biggest, the most, and the first fish of day. Debbie brought 9 nice adults to net while Lake brought 3. Combined Mom and her Son hooked up 20 fish. Just another fantastic double digit Klamath day.
Debbie's big fish of the day, was a nice 22 to 24 inch, 4 to 5 pounder. Both Debbie and Luke hooked and lost bigger Steelies. As we all know they love to jump, roll and run at you. This of course can put slack in your line, giving them that opportunity to shake that barbless hook.
Debbie and Luke caught all their fish while side casting plugs lathered in ProCure Carpspit. Fish size has remained consistent with past years, 12 to 28 inches and 1 to 8 pounds. We have mostly been catching Winter Steelies ranging in size from 16 to 25 inches and 2 to 6 pounds. Biggest Steelhead so far have been over 26 inches and 7 pounds, we have also had some surprising silver action, and the biggest of those have been 10 to 12 pounds and 30 inches.
Indicator/Bobber action on the flyrod with eggs an legs remains one of my top methods for hooking up these hard fighting Klamath Steelies.
The Sacramento Sportsman Expo is a mere 2 weeks away (Jan 19-22 Thursday to Sunday) and I will be there again although in a different booth. PAVILION BUILDING BOOTH 3414
