The reservoir levels are at 67% and rising. Water temperatures range from 47 to 48 degrees. Fishing overall has been fair, with some days showing excellent success for rainbow trout and walleye, while other days have been slow. DWR hatchery staff recently stocked our fall quota (55,000) of 10-inch rainbow trout as well as some extra 3-4 inch rainbow trout. Walleye fishing between cold fronts has been fair to good. Walleye are using depths from 20-55 feet of water. They are in feeding mode and are eating small stocked rainbow trout as well as 2-3 inch "young of year" yellow perch, crayfish and any other fish they can find. Walleye are spread out all across the reservoir right now. Our forage base appears to be more abundant this year, but large schools of adult yellow perch are still difficult to find. We observed many anglers fishing for trout from shore. Success varied by area, but overall, fishing has been good for rainbow trout this past week. Some reports of success from fly anglers have come in as well. If you have a float tube, Rabbit Gulch can provide some good fishing and has been producing rainbow trout up to 20 inches in length.
The aquatics staff completed the fall walleye index netting last week. We are currently working on data analysis and will provide a more detailed update when this step is complete. We are still encouraging anglers to target and harvest smaller walleye in this system. Recruitment and survival of small walleye in Starvation Reservoir has been exceptional over the past few years. Forage is still a limiting factor for walleye growth in Starvation Reservoir. Harvest of small walleye from 10-16 inches in total length is encouraged at this time. Fish this size range from 2-5 years old and we are seeing a "stacking" effect at age 3 for walleye in this system.
