Kern River Fishing Report
5-6-2022
Chad Burton and Chris Borden
In the Upper Kern anglers continue to do well from Riverside Park in Kernville to Johnsondale Bridge. The DFWL has stocked here weekly for most of the year and the flows have been ideal. The best bet is finding the easy access points to the river and starting there, since that’s most likely where it gets stocked. Trout have been coming throughout the 20-mile stretch with salmon eggs, spinners, crickets and minijigs. Fly anglers have had good success in the afternoons after the hatches with dry flies. This week the Upper Kern was stocked in Section 4, Riverside Park in Kernville to Powerhouse #3. This week In the Lower Kern, the DFWL stocked all three sections in the canyon. The flowing sections were stocked this week; Section 1, Democrat Beach to Lower Richbar; Section 2, Sandy Flat to Democratic Beach; Section 3, Sandy Flat to the Isabella Dam. The trout bite improved after the loads of trout were dumped. Fish have been coming on salmon eggs, Get Bent Baits, GULP! pinched crawlers and Garlic doused Powerbait. The Bass action remains steady in the slower pools has with minijigs, Senkos, jigs, and spinners. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River was flowing at 639 CFS and the Lower Kern River was flowing at 419 CFS.
