Most Useful Catch

Bruce Smith docked Norm Kagawa's Shogun October 18 after an eight-day open party trip with 25 anglers aboard.

"We had darn good fishing," he said to dock reporter Bill Roecker at the scales on the slab at Pt. Loma Sportfishing, where he unloaded and weighed his catch.

"After we left The Rocks we went up to Turtle Bay and got limits of yellowtail. When we went outside, still in the off-colored water, we got 100 yellowfin tuna of 20 to 40 pounds!"

The most unusual catch of the trip wasn't a fish, but a rod and reel apparently lost from another boat. The outfit, snagged on the bottom by Mike Rawlings of Chandler, AZ, was a Calstar 7465 rod and an Avet LX two-speed reel. He said they were both pretty salty and beat up by immersion and strong currents.

"During some slow time I took them into the galley and cleaned them up good," he said. "Then I took 'em outside and got a wahoo, tuna, yellowtail and dorado with the rig the next day."

Dave Hensley of Ontario caught a 42-pound yellowtail with a flylined sardine to win the Rollo jackpot.

Tuna swept the jackpots, there was a tie for third, and a chunk produced the best yellowtail of the trip.

Mark Shoemaker of El Sobrante won first place for a 92.6-pound yellowfin. He said it took a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 50-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader, 80-pound Line One Spectra, a Tiagra 16 reel and a 765 ML rod.

John Barta of LaVerne won second place for a 90.4-pound tuna. Barry Spires of Garden Grove tied with Marlowe Patterson of Orange for third. Both men had 90.2-pound tuna, and Patterson also had the big yellowtail, a 49-pounder.
