Horizon Capts Log 10/9 Santa Barbara Island

10-9-2009

Today was one of the top 3 days that we've had in our 10 years of venturing to Santa Barbara Island! Amazing diving for the sightseers and bug hunters in the crowd...you could not go wrong!

Fantastic water conditions, 65 degrees and 80 foot visibility coupled with flat calm weather and out of this world encounters made for an outstanding day at the "Island of the Sea Lions".

The best dive of the day was at our newest site, "Greg's Wall". This site is phenominal with spectacular topography on a wall that starts at 110 feet and explodes straight up to 30 feet. The wall, from what we've explored so far is at least 75 yards long. At it's top it plateaus out into an incredible scenery of ledges, canyon and valleys. Today at this site we encountered a schools of yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, giant sea bass, bat rays and huge lobster!

Our bug hunter managed to grab over 60 legal sized lobster today with many in the 5 - 7 pound range! As I stated earlier...today was one of our BEST ever at Santa Barbara Island! Absolutely over the top!!!

Tonight we will head east to San Clemente Island to for our final day of this trip. We are excited at the diving has been incredible there as well.

Until Tomorrow,
Captain Spencer
