Remember in the last report, I said it couldn't get any better - oh, boy, was I wrong and boy, did it get better. The colors around the lake - indescribable - oranges going up the west slope of the Lake and when that early morning sun hits the golds and reds on the east side down by the water - ahhhhhhhhh. The big aspen grove on the north side of the dam (the non-water side) is just barely starting to turn and the groves before coming into Aspendell have yet to turn. But from what we understand, the South Lake road is looking spectacular as is North Lake. Haven't had a chance to go for a ride yet to see it up close and personal.
There is a huge change in store for us this week - cooler temps, actually cold temps coming in. We hope the leaves will survive or by Thursday we may only have black leaves on the ground. There is a hard freeze warning in our future for Tuesday and Wednesday accompanied by that four letter word - w-i-n-d and a slight chance of a dusting of snow. If we get the anticipated cold, well, the vibrant leaves around Lake Sabrina will be history.
Now for the other reason you read the report - fishing or rather the catching of the fish got lots better. Haven't heard this lately - fishing this week has been good. Lots of fish finally coming out of the lake. The DingleBerry Inlet was hot for those using the tried and true stand-bys - NightCrawlers or PowerBait. Trolling with flashers and a NightCrawler or Thomas Buoyants. The weather is cooling, thus the water is cooling, thus the fish are coming up so you don't need to try and get down deep. Drifting a NightCrawler or PowerBait is still working and if you add Salmon Eggs onto that list, you'll have what seems to be working from shore. DFG stocked the lake on Wednesday.
My apologies to Edie Dewitt of Yucaipa who about 2 weeks ago caught a nice 3 pound rainbow on PowerBait. Her picture was taken on another camera and I had a dickens of a time getting it together to get that picture onto a computer. Also, four-and-a-half year old twins, Craig and Brandon Phoenix of Mission Viejo celebrated their families catch and were eatin' good that night. Good job, boys!
The deer hunters are in the area, so don't be alarmed if you see people walking around with orange caps and vests and toting a rifle. This may scare a doe or fawn out of the foliage (should would scare me) so remember - WATCH OUT FOR OUR WILD LIFE - especially in the pre-dawn and pre-dusk hours. Also, during the Fall, keep an extra eye out for the errant photographer - they'll walk right out in front of you with a tripod or set the tripod up in the middle of the road trying for that perfect picture. So keep your speeds down, especially going around the corners on the road from Camp Sabrina to Lake Sabrina or actually anywhere there's color. They'll also abandon their cars in the middle of the road. JUST WATCH OUT AND BE CAREFUL!
The campground closures - the following campgrounds closed as of September 21st: North Lake, Sabrina Camp, Bishop Park Group, Table Mountain Group, Mountain Glenn, and Willows. Another campgrounds closure to add to the list - Bishop Park Campground closed the gate Sunday, September 27th.
As I said before - the cold is coming, but only for a few days, then a bit warmer than earlier in the week and then there is another storm due in next Sunday, but you may also want to take a look at www.weather.gov for the Aspendell area forecast toward the latter part of the week.
A HUGE thank you to Samantha (Juanita's Grand-daughter) who entered over 400 e-mails over the last week to re-construct the database. We hope you are once again getting the report.
* * * NEWS FLASH * * * Verizon has removed the payphone out in front of Lake Sabrina Boat Landing. Cardinal Village will be your closest option as not very many cell phone providers work in the area; Bishop Creek Lodge, Parchers Resort and Creekside RV Park are your other choices.
With the return of warmer weather the skeeters have returned, so remember the bug juice and COMMIT TO MEMORY, IF YOU PUT ON BUG JUICE, SUN SCREEN OR FOO FOO JUICE, WASH YOUR HANDS! THEN RUB THEM IN WORM GOO, TROUT ATTRACTANT OR POWERBAIT - GET THE OTHER SCENT OFF!
Also, don't forget your sunscreen and dark glasses, the glare on the water is soooo bright, they just might blind your eyeballs. PONCHOS or COATS MAY ALSO BE NEEDED - YOU NEVER KNOW!
ALWAYS PACK A JACKET! ! ! !
You all have a great week and if the stress gets too great, you all know where to come to get some relief! But, remember you don't need to be stressed to come. WE JUST WANT TO SEE YOU SOON!
