The southern California fishing has exploded into high gear as summer approaches- here are some highlights:
As reported by 976bite.com, there was some decent surface fishing at the Coronado Islands yesterday with a mix of yellowtail, calico bass and barracuda biting. The yellowtail action was hit or miss, but if you were fortunate enough be at the right spot at the right time and also get a break from the seals, it was possible to put together a good count. The San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing had some good yellowtail action and had 37 anglers on a 3/4 day trip catch 40 yellowtail, 18 barracuda and 6 calico bass. Productive areas for the surface fishing are the Middle Grounds, north end of South Island, the Ribbon Kelp along the lee side of South Island and the South Kelp Ridge below South Island.
San Clemente Island has been hit and miss for yellowtail and white sea bass. Look for that fishing to improve as more yellowtail move into the island.
The offshore albacore scene is starting to pick up. The Royal Star had 34 albacore outside Punta Colnett on Tuesday and the American Angler scored 36 albacore and 3 bluefin tuna the same day about 80 miles south of the Royal Star. Captain Shaun Trowbridge of the Legend reports excellent water conditions and tons of anchovies in the 1 ? day range, so watch this weekend for improved catches.
The Red Rooster 3 reports a possible record yellowfin tuna on their "June Heat" trip- the fish taped out at 380 pounds, but could go larger. The Rooster returns to H and M Landing on Sunday morning to get an official weight. You can count on live reports this weekend on Let's Talk Hook-up from the offshore fleet as well as long range boats. Speaking of Let's Talk Hook-up, we have a great weekend of shows heard on XX 1090AM Saturday and Sunday 7am to 9am- also streaming on the web at www.hookup1090.com - click the listen live link on the front page of the web site.
